If you use Gmail in your school or work, you may lose access to the account if you graduate or change jobs. Other times, you might have accidentally deleted some stuff and later regret it. Due to the news article mentioned in the show, I am in the process of extending the setup to other family members as well, but it is quite hard to fine tune the imapsync process no to bump into the quite draconian gmail ratelimits. The obvious problem is if someone gets your password. There is nothing special in this setup, i converged on it over the years. At the moment I've got 42435 emails in this setup, online compressed down to 57Gb (uncompressed size is 78Gb), there are 145961 documents in the recoll index. The main interface is still the gmail app/web for recent emails, anything older can be reliabli found with the above setup. To accomplish this I made 2 docker container - 1 for mbsync and 1 for dovecot and I made them configurable through environment variables. However, the issue came in that I wanted all this to run on my synology NAS directly and not running on a seperate server saving to the NAS. For an added bonus, I set up nextcloud to be external facing. I use mbsync to pull emails and dovecot to re-serve them so that my iPhone email app (wireguard split tunnel) can always access my local emails like any other email account. I've sne switched to fastmail but still have a lot of email forwarded from Gmail still and wanted to keep and complete backup of my email for local purposes.
